Step-by-step instructions for making a patchwork quilt with hearts
Planning and materials:
1- Quilt size: define beforehand. Common examples:
Double: 160 x 210 cm
Queen: 210 x 210 cm
Customize according to the size of your bed.
2- Fabric selection:
Base fabric (background): raw cotton or lightweight crepe, in a light color.
Fabric for the hearts: printed or plain cotton in shades of red, pink, and white.
Borders and contrast: soft shades of blue-gray or lace, as shown in the image.
3- Elements:
5 x 5 cm scraps for the borders of the hearts (or 6 x 6 cm, depending on the desired size).
A fabric for the lining (back) of the same size as the quilt.
Good quality acrylic batting.
4- Tools:
Sewing machine, thread in predominant colors, rotary cutter, ruler, pins, seam sealant, iron, and ironing board. Quilting machine (optional) or hand sewing for manual quilting.

Block Map Design:
The idea is to form a grid of square blocks (e.g., 12 blocks long and 7 wide).
Each block contains a central heart with a rounded-side pattern.
Divide the quilt into equal rows and columns for easy alignment.
Example: 12 cm x 12 cm block with an 8 cm wide heart (with a 2 cm margin around it).
Preparing the hearts (patchwork patterns):
Cut 2 pieces of 12 x 12 cm for each block (background and heart).
Cut 2 to 3 smaller scraps for the inside of the heart to create the patchwork effect.
Assembling the heart: Sew the inside with small stitches, forming the classic heart with soft stuffing.
Tips:
Use small stitches (2-3 mm).
Avoid puckering the fabric; pin before the final stitch.
Assembling the blocks:
In each block, position the central heart in the center of the bottom square.
Sew the heart to the bottom with a straight stitch along the edge, using soft thread in a contrasting color.
Add details with small appliqués around the heart for texture (optional).
Reinforce with a second row of stitches, if necessary, for added firmness.
Assembling the quilt:
* Arrange the blocks in a grid as planned (alternating shades of pink, red, and white for harmony).
Join the blocks in horizontal rows, then join the vertical rows.
Check the alignment and adjust with pins if necessary.
* Preparing the stuffing and backing fabric:
Cut the stuffing and backing fabric to the same measurements as the quilt. Position the quilt with the right side up, batting underneath, and backing fabric on top (or vice versa, depending on the chosen technique).
Pin everything to prevent movement.
* Quilting (finishing stitch):
Use a quilting machine in straight lines around each heart block or freehand quilt.
Follow the lines of the blocks for a perfect finish; you can sew gentle curves to match the shape of the hearts.
If you prefer, do a simple straight quilt every 2-3 cm for a uniform texture.
* Edge finishing:
Fold the 1.5-2 cm seam allowance on each side of the quilt and sew to form the hem.
Add an outer edge (bias binding) with fabric in a shade that matches the hearts (red, pink, or light blue).
Calculate the width of the hem (3-4 cm) and join around for a clean closure.
* Finishing Touches
Wash the quilt gently to remove cutting residue and soften the fabrics.
Iron, keeping the steam low to avoid deforming the hearts.
Check for loose stitches and iron again if necessary.
* Extra Tips:
Use a set of 9 blocks with medium hearts, forming a 3×3 or 4×4 grid, as in the image.
Mix different heart patterns (floral, polka dots, stripes) to create visual interest, but keep the color palette in shades of pink, red, and grayish blue.
Include simple embroidered details inside some hearts for a handcrafted touch.
Choose a background border with a neutral color or a soft print to balance the quilt.
* Quick Questions to Adapt the Guide to You:
What is the size of your bed (double, queen, king)?
Do you prefer patchwork with 12×12 cm blocks or different sizes?
Will you quilt by machine or by hand? What colors do you intend to use (shades of pink, red, and blue, as shown in the image)?
